We need to talk about Kevin Analysis
We need to talk about Kevin is a 2011 British-American thriller drama film. The film is an adaptation of the book by Lionel Shriver, In 2005 BBC films acquired the rights. The film was directed by Lynne Ramsey and produced by Jennifer Fox. Some of the main themes are family, violence, power, guilt. Financing began in 2005 however filming began in April 2010.
The film is based around Eva who is played by Tilda Swinton and her son Kevin who is played by Ezra Miller and their relationship as Kevin grows up. The narrative structure of the film is nonlinear, as the film has flashbacks from when Kevin was a child and throughout his childhood. This technique is very effective for the viewers as it helps them understand what Kevins childhood was like and how Eva coped with it. It also helps the audience see all the key colours used throughout the film and how important they are. The films budget was $7 million and earned $10.8 million in box office.
One of the major colours used in this film is red, this connoted danger and blood. This colour is seen throughout the film however, we rarely see blood the other uses of red in the film represent the danger surrounding Kevin. This is shown in the scene when Eva takes Kevin to see a doctor because he is not yet speaking, the colour red is used here as the shirt he is wearing is red. It's also shown in the scene where Eva is asking Kevin the roll the red ball back to her. In the first scene you are shown the door with the sprinklers in the background which is foreshadowing to later events in the film. After that you are shown Eva at some sort of festival, which could also be foreshadowing later events in the film as the tomatoes could be a representation of the bloodshed later on in the film.
Another main colour used in the film is yellow, even though this colour isn't used as often but there are some key scenes using the colour yellow, for example when Kevin get the parcel full of the yellow locks and then later on in the film we see them again, when we see them the second time it makes the audience put together what is happening. The colour yellow connotes happiness and being sick. The colour yellow is always seen throughout the film however, it's always in the background of the main scene, which could connote that happiness is missing from the family.
The performances in this film were very good, as we get to empathise with Eva (Tilda Swinton) about Kevin and how she handles everything that's going on in her life before and after the event and how she has changed. The performance from Ezra Miller (Kevin) was very good as well because we saw how he manipulated his father into thinking his mother was all wrong about him and how he treated his mother all throughout the film. This film has a approval rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. On Metacritic it received a score of 68 out of 100 based on 38 critics.
