Winters Bone and Captain Fantastic
Winters bone is a 2010 American independent drama film. It's an adaptation of Daniel Woodrell's 2006 novel. The film was directed by Debra Granik. The film is about a teenage girl who is played by Jennifer Lawrence, who is searching for her father to protect her family.
Captain Fantastic is a 2016 American comedy-drama film. It was written and directed by Matt Ross. The film is based around one family who are trying to for fill their mothers wishes.
Although the films are different they both have a very similar theme of protecting their families. They are both set in America and are based around one family. In Winters bone it's focused on a family who are going to get evicted from their home if they don't locate the father. Whereas, in Captain fantastic it's based around a father and his six children who he has raised in the wild, who are trying to for fill their mothers dying wish. Even though the families are represented differently, there is some similarities such as, both families are trying to protect their family. Also the way both families live are quite similar even though the family in Winters bone live in a house.
Both films are very similar in the camera angles used, they both use a lot of close up shots to connote the way the characters are feeling. They also use a lot of wide angle shots to show their surroundings, to let the audience know whats going on around them.
The colours in both films are very different. In Winters bone the colour scheme is dull and dark, to connote the feelings of the characters and to show the mood of the film. Whereas, Captain fantastic colour scheme is very bright and vibrant. Even though the films it's self is quite upsetting the colours used connote a different feeling, this is because the family are trying to succeed in their task for their mother. By using bright colours it connotes that the mood is joyful. However, in contrast the scenes where the family are in the wild are quite darkly lit, except the one of them surrounding their mother. This shows the mood of the family when they were living in the wild before they knew what happened to their mother.
In both films you can see that both families come across obstacles trying to stop them. But in both films they overcome these obstacles, this is because both families are adamant in succeeding in their tasks. Also, both films were made on quite low budgets, with winters bone budget only being $2 million and captain fantastic's being $5 million. Both films made more than their budget with box office, winters bone being $16.1 million and capatin fantastic's being $14.9 million. The film winters bone was Jennifer Lawrences breakthrough film, this then led to her starring in other big films.
